Chelsea Young is an East Texan through and through.

Born and raised in New London, TX, a small piney-woods town just short of 1,000 people, she moved 40 miles north to Gilmer her Junior Year. Though the change was hard at that time in her life, it gave her a deeper understanding – and appreciation – of the local spirit and the pride that goes into being a true East Texan.

It’s an important anecdote that she passes on to prospects so that they understand… she’s from here, she lives here, this is her home, too. It's people to people, East Texan to East Texan when you do business with Chelsea. Nowhere was this fact more prevalent than in a recent deal with Cunningham Funeral Home in Kilgore, an oil-famous East Texas town split between Gilmer and New London along HWY 135.

The Business Challenge.

The mother-daughter duo that ran Cunningham Funeral Home was nervous at first.

Sure, they’d had copier vendors come through in recent months with their pitch, but the two were turned off by their pushiness or their big ideas for how things would change. Cunningham was comfortable with outsourcing all their printed materials, they’d done it for years, even though it presented some disadvantages. As we can all attest to, change is scary.

Chelsea was doing her “five to the right, five to the left” prospecting when she stumbled into the funeral home.

“Everyone who had stopped by previously was a little too much for her,” Chelsea said. “They were nervous about the expense of a new machine, sure. They were worried that on slow days or months, it wouldn’t be beneficial. That’s when, in that first conversation, I let her know I was from the area, 30 minutes down the road from where their business was. My goal was to make her feel comfortable and that I wasn’t pushy.”

That sparked some interest. When she called back to set up a Discovery meeting, the daughter (who handled the printing) was busy. Chelsea called back multiple times, giving a few days in between to NOT be too pushy. Eventually, a meeting was set up.

The Strategic Approach.

In the Discovery Meeting, Chelsea (along with Sales Manager Josh Sims) spoke to them about the downside of outsourcing. The fact that mistakes get made and getting them corrected can be tough, they were dependent on the press shop hours, etc. They also put them at ease by rattling off some neighboring Funeral Homes who were using Datamax as their print partner.

“That kind of helped them understand, if this funeral home is doing it, we can do it, too,” Chelsea said. “At the proposal meeting later on, we even presented a list of all the funeral homes (around 50) that Datamax serves in North Texas. This helped even more because they were familiar with so many of these businesses.”

The Prevailing Results.

As an extra “neighborly touch” on the day of installation, Chelsea stopped by with some flowers and Datamax goodies before the delivery truck arrived.  The mother/daughter duo felt relieved when they saw her first, as they were still a little nervous about the change that awaited them. But these continuous reminders that Chelsea’s from here, she’s got their best interest at heart… that’s what makes Raving Fans out of fellow East Texans.

“Kilgore is home to me. The whole area is. I would not come to them with my proposal if I didn’t truly believe it would benefit them. And they put a lot of trust into that, and the fact that they trusted me and Datamax so much, that meant a lot to me.”

People to people. East Texan to East Texan. Just as the last line of the film Casablanca alludes to, this looks to be the beginning of a beautiful partnership between client and copier partner.
