The Account Representative: Chris Bostick

As a graduate of the University of Alabama and a member of the band there, Chris Bostick was well aware of what a Raving Fan was. Creating them? He’s picking that up pretty quickly, too.

“At Alabama, obviously, it’s all about football out there,” Chris said. “When I first flipped through the Little Blue Book, and noticed the ‘Creating Raving Fans’ slogan, the first thing I thought of, honestly, was the student section at an Alabama football game. I realize that that’s the kind of experience we’re trying to create here.”

The Business Challenge

Dermatology of East Texas is a brand new facility, making the logistics of opening up a new office a massive undertaking.

For Chris, being fresh out of Canon Boot Camp when he first met with this client, the biggest challenge was acquainting himself with the processes, the methodologies, and the technology itself. But Chris has hit the ground running with his new position, as evidenced by the relationships already built and the success of one of his first completed deals at Datamax.

Chris spent his first couple of weeks on the job shadowing the former Datamax rep and meeting with clients. It was at one of these meetings that he met a contact with Cardiovascular Associates of East Texas, a longtime customer. This particular contact happened to know of a new office opening across town, Dermatology of East Texas.

“So that’s how it started. She began asking me a lot of questions – some of which I didn’t know the answer at the time. But I worked to find those answers,” Chris says. “What was amazing to me was how comfortable she felt with our company. Here’s another doctor on the other side of town and she’s recommending us without hesitation.”

Chris took the lead and ran.

The Thought Process

As a new employee, he speaks candidly about the advantages he gained from his time at Canon Boot Camp.

“A lot of trainings are you sit and listen for 8 hours a day. What was great to me, is that they gave us a lot of hands on training. That impacted me more than anything, just getting my hands on the machine and learning the capabilities. As an outsider, I didn’t know some office down the road could have some of the same capabilities as a print shop.”

Another, perhaps more valuable, lesson Chris has learned?

“After meeting with people the last several weeks, I realize the positive impact of creating relationships. A lot of people will come to your office and say, ‘look how can I save you money.’ I realize that it’s not that. You’re trying to get in there and build a long-term relationship.”

The Prevailing Results

Chris overcame challenges associated with being a new employee to deliver Raving Results.

“Even with my faults of being new and learning as I go, we still delivered the equipment ahead of time, which they were thrilled with,” Chris said. “Now, we’re talking about looking at other areas of their business, and I think they’re already a Raving Fan because of the influence of the contact at Cardiovascular.”

And with that, Chris makes another Alabama football comparison.

“The one thing about that team – win or lose, rain or shine – the fans are still going to be there because they know the school. They bleed the colors,” Chris says. “I want people to feel the same way about myself and Datamax.”
