In 1910, Norwegian explorer Ronald Amundsen became the first person ever to reach the South Pole, beating the British team by weeks. Enduring brutal, unknown terrain, using dogsleds and native Arctic techniques, he nailed it on the first try.
In 2025, Datamax Enterprise Solutions Specialist Jeffrey Flory sold a CommCare deal that, when completed, will total more than 1,200 phones and become the largest Datamax CommCare deal to date. Like Ronald, he nailed it on the first try.
While these two historical events remain completely unrelated in terms of context, in both instances, both parties thrived on making connections in unchartered territory. And, for lack of a better phrase, they were both chilling performances.
Though it was his first CommCare project, Jeff, by no means, came at this thing cold. He’d previously served as a Color Sales Manager and a Document Management Specialist at Datamax from 1995 to 2012. He capitalized on his three decades of industry experience and a wealth of technical expertise. He leaned on his team – notably Sales Manager Lee Wise – for support. He utilized timeless elements of building a business partnership: Relationship building, trust, alignment of goals and expectations, and a commitment of following through.
These are all intangible skills that, over time, Jeff has both explored and conquered.
The Business Challenge.
Stonegate Senior Living, based in Lewisville, TX, covers all areas of quality senior living, from skilled nursing and long-term care, to even access to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for its residents. They own 32 locations across Texas and Oklahoma.
Streamlined communication isn’t just important for their business operations. It’s key to the safety and liability associated with their elderly residents.
Streamlined? Not entirely. The center currently had 32 Private Branch Exchange (PBX) networks spread across the organization. With these systems, if the power goes out, so do the phones. Internet outage? No Internet = no calls.
“Another glaring issue is that they could not get parts for these phone systems,” Jeff said. “So, if the facility is down, their phone could be down until they put a brand new system in.”
The Strategic Approach.
Jeff’s relationship (and friendship) with Pat, the Vice President of IT at Stonegate, dates back some time to previous companies and trusted business technology partnerships. So, he had an opening to at least explore the possibilities that come with Unified Communications as a Service (UCaas) with Datamax.
The center evaluated four different UCaaS solutions. There were immediate advantages to Datamax – the ability to move a business call to a smartphone, the business chat feature, and the sleek interface of the platform. But Jeff and the team remained steadfast in their due diligence.
“We had probably eight hours of discovery with them, across four or so meetings, because there are so many moving parts with a project like this: toll-free numbers, auto attendants, all kinds of scenarios that needed to be understood by both parties,” Jeff said.
As time went on, the Vice President of IT said that the CommCare solution stood out among the rest.
“Its intuitive and user-friendly interface was the most seamless of the four, ensuring ease of use for staff at all levels. Additionally, CommCare offered the best overall value, combining robust features, reliability, and cost-effectiveness to meet the unique communication needs of senior living companies,” Pat said.
The Prevailing Results.
Even with the flurry of features, seamless communication capabilities, and guaranteed uptime, this deal came down to trust. Trust between Pat and his longtime trusted technology advisor, Jeff. Trust with a team that continues to hit the mark on providing answers and solutions.
