Jim Snell's Story
(Logistics Manager, Dallas/Fort Worth Office) Jim Snell strives to be the “go-to” guy. And he found at Datamax what he’d been previously seeking in his career — growth and opportunity. The growth of his career path with this organization may only be outpaced by the confidence he’s gained since arriving in 2006.
What led me to Datamax?
“I was in my early 20s. At my place of employment at the time, we’d see the copier guy come in once a week, and I thought to myself, “hey, that’d be steady.” I went to work for a major manufacturer as a dispatcher. When the company took dispatching to a centralized location, I was forced into becoming a service technician.
I enjoyed the work, but I really felt like I was limited in what I could do and where I could go — there wasn’t a lot invested in my career. It wasn’t their priority to give us the training that we needed.
I joined Datamax in 2006, and it was supposed to be that “job until I got another job."
My experiences at Datamax:
"Once I started working here, I realized that this company made me want to work for it. I remained a service technician until 2012, when I joined the logistics department as a shop technician (Jim would within a year earn the role of Logistics Supervisor and eventually Logistics Manager). I really enjoyed working with logistics.
From the outside looking in, you see a warehouse. That’s what I saw when I was in the field. But there’s so much to it.
I’ve learned so many things here that I never thought I was capable of doing. I found out quickly that there is more to a Logistics Manager’s job than just moving freight. There were times I was hesitant to do a task, afraid that I would cause an irreversible mistake. Every time I felt that way I had the support of my manager to guide me along. That helped me to not only gain the experience I needed, but built up my confidence as well."
What makes me want to stay at Datamax?
"Personally for me, I have always wanted to be that go-to guy. I want people to look back and say, ‘hey I can go to Jim and he’ll get that taken care of."
One thing that surprised me about Datamax: The willingness of everyone to pitch in to accomplish a task. Every department relies on each other and it is amazing to me to see so many people coming together to help achieve our goals. No one has the “that’s not my job” attitude.
When we have a large order, there’s so many different departments involved. It’s a lot of moving parts. But when you’ve got so many people working together, and you get that huge install done, you can’t beat that sense of pride, that you and so many others were instrumental in getting it done."
