Robert O'Gorman's Story
(Director of Sales - Dallas/Fort Worth Office) — Want to hear more about Robert O’Gorman’s Datamax story? Grab a chair.
Settle in. Need a snack? He’s willing to go as long as you’re willing to listen. It’s not that Robert is longwinded (he’s not) – it’s that he genuinely loves this place. He fully understands the difference makers we all hold in our war chest as we go to market. He’s realized his potential here (Robert was recently promoted to Director of Sales for Dallas/Fort Worth) and, for this Rave Review scribe’s 1.5 cents, he’s just getting started.
In his career thus far, Robert’s tasted the sour, so he appreciates the sweet. He knows what it’s like to field angry customer calls on repeat, and he knows that here, if he can control what he can control, and lean into the colleagues around him otherwise… well…. That’s a pretty good formula for creating something worth Raving about.
What led me to Datamax?
After graduating from Texas A&M University in 2018, a friend referred Robert to a small copier dealership in the Farmers Branch area. After about a year, the manufacturer purchased the dealership (along with around 150 others) and changes began to unfold. While he enjoyed working under a manager who still serves as a mentor today, service and administration were eventually outsourced overseas.
“I was selling product as an account manager, and all the sudden clients are mad at me; I couldn’t stand by the product or the support any longer,” Robert said.
Robert recalls two cold calling appointments at that company within a month of another that led him to where he is today: It was a church and then a law firm.
“Both told me, ‘You could give it to us and we would stay with Datamax,’” Robert said. “My thought was: What better place for me to reach out to?... It was a hard thing to do to make that jump. I was 10 months away from my wedding day when I switched… I remember this conversation I had with my dad at the time, I told him ‘All this stuff they’re telling me, it sounds too good to be true.’ His response was “If even half of it is true, it sounds better than where you are right now.”
As they say, a father’s words are like a compass – quiet, steady, and always pointing you toward home.
My experiences at Datamax:
Two things struck Robert pretty quickly about this organization upon hire.
- “They do it right.”
- “They all genuinely like each other.”
“I’m going to be honest, all that was a little foreign to me at the time,” Robert said.
Robert embraced the support around him and utilized his skill set full throttle. He became a model for the way sales professionals deliver solutions and garner trust from those they serve. In July 2023, he was promoted to Sales Manager, where he guided the career paths of others and, perhaps, began to mirror the efforts of his own mentor in this industry.
In April 2025, he was promoted to Director of Sales.
“What made it work for me? This attitude of ‘control what you can control,’ which is my attitude and effort, and the rest falls into place. I found myself freed up to prospect and to build my territory because I wasn’t putting out customer fires. Besides, it’s fun. Not one day is going to look exactly the same as another. Every customer, every prospect you work with is different. Every person you work with here at Datamax is unique… but they’re all fun, too.”
What makes me want to stay at Datamax?
“I mention this time and time again, and call it cliché, but we are all working together. Department to department, people to people… The quicker you realize that change is the only constant in any business, the better off you are. If I can control what I can control, have that trust in Datamax to do the right thing for both its customers and employees, all that’s left for me to do is my job to the best of my ability, while making sure that I’ve earned that trust right back.”
