Letter on the Third — April 2018
Dear Datamax Family,
I’m very excited to share the first ever Datamax Letter on the Third with each and every one of you today. This monthly letter, started by East Texas Copy Systems President Greg Walker in August 2012, will be sent out to the entire Datamax organization, highlighting successes, addressing issues and ultimately building stronger communication company-wide.
I’d like to open with a story about building. A group of common laborers are hired to tear down a building. Lacking the skill necessary to actually BUILD the same structure they are hastily knocking down, the foreman says “Why, we can wreck in a day or two what it took the builders years to do,” The story continues…
So I asked myself as I went my way, which of these roles have I tried to play? Am I a builder who builds with care, measuring life by rule or square? Or am I a wrecker, who walks by content with the labor of tearing down.
Are we builders at Datamax?
I believe in staying green: In other words, you are either growing or you are dying. We must remain green and growing, building something bigger and better together.
As we once again welcome employees in Tyler, Longview and Lufkin to the Datamax family, I want to reiterate that the recent East Texas Copy Systems acquisition is a perfect example of the type of growth we want to achieve. Back in January, our Marketing Department put together a side-by-side flyer that laid out a list of common threads between the two companies. While that’s a great thing to put on paper, I think we’re seeing the cultural and organizational likenesses come to light. I am energized by the cultural blend that is transpiring between these two companies as we build an even stronger Datamax foundation together. This very letter is a perfect example of that.
Another example of building something significant: As you may know, Datamax Arkansas is celebrating its 35-year anniversary this year. We have employees here in Little Rock that have been here since 1983: That is a sign of great culture. We will continue to discuss this anniversary, as the Little Rock office celebrates an open house on May 10.
I talk a lot about culture here. It’s so important to put the right person with the right job with the right relationship. I like to say that in all organizations, employees are one of the four: peak performers and culture champions, poor performers and cultural champions, peak performers and culture killers, and poor performers and culture killers.
We need peak performers and cultural champions in 2018. How can you, at your job, do your part in building at Datamax every day? A great start is by taking to heart our Datamax cultural mission: Creating Raving Fans®.
Your Raving Fan,
