Letter on the Third — December 2025
Dear Datamax Family,
As we come to the end of another year at Datamax, we’re all preparing for The Next Wave. In that spirit, after nearly forty-five years with this organization, I want to share with each of you that I will be retiring and stepping away from day-to-day operations as President at the end of December.
This is a transition that COO Steven Sumner and I have been working toward for nearly two years. Effective January 1, Steven will assume the role of President of Datamax Inc., and I have the highest confidence in his ability to lead this company into its next season. I’ll still be available to support him, help with vendor and partner transitions, and anything else he would need. My hope is that this moment sets a smooth and steady transition into the Next Wave for all of us.
A Wave of Support.
When I think about the path that brought me here, I’m filled with appreciation for the support I’ve received. I go back to 1981 when I met with Dick Callier (VP of Sales), and then not long after, walked into Steve Sumner’s office, and we hit it off immediately. I knew this was where I needed to be. When I moved to Little Rock in 1985 at Steve’s request, I never imagined the growth, the culture, and the relationships that would come from that one decision.
There have been several anchors in my journey. The Copier Dealers Association, which I joined in 1985, has been a guiding force for decades. In all these years, I’ve missed only one meeting. The relationship with Mike Riordan, which began with a handshake in 1995, shaped so much of who we became. The Little Blue Book, our philosophy, tagline, and the idea of Creating Raving Fans were born from the work and learning that came out of that partnership. My involvement with Young Presidents Organization in Little Rock helped strengthen how I viewed leadership, culture, and accountability.
I’ve been proud of the recognition our teams have earned together. Recognition from manufacturers. Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Ethics. Eight years of Best Places to Work. Best Places meant so much because every year we looked at the employee feedback survey, openly asked how we could improve, and took it to heart. I’ve also been honored to give back to the community through CARTI, Centers for Youth and Families, Ronald McDonald House, and so many others. None of this happens without the people beside you, and we have been blessed with a remarkable group of support.
A Wave of Momentum.
I’ve been very fortunate to have my wife be supportive of all my endeavors, even when we moved to Little Rock. Especially early on, it took considerable time and effort to establish relationships with people and build strong ties with the community here. Patti has already made it clear she does not want me home all the time. (She also reminds me regularly that she is not one of my employees!). So that tells me I’ll need to find something to keep me busy. I’ve joked for years that I could always be a greeter at Walmart. Who knows, maybe you’ll see me there.
In all seriousness, people have asked why this is the right moment. The simple answer is that it’s time for the next generation to take the company to the next level. Steven has a strong desire to succeed and a vision for where we’re headed – the momentum going into this next chapter is strong. I’ll continue supporting community efforts and staying connected where it makes sense.
A Wave of Appreciation.
Most of all, I want to thank each of you. It’s been an absolute honor to serve as President of Datamax Inc. Everything we’ve done together has been rooted in the belief that Culture Trumps Everything. It’s visible in the longevity of the people in this organization. It’s visible in how you support each other and in how you support our customers.
As you continue building this company, always consider how the company can benefit you and how you can benefit the company. When something isn’t working, talk to the people who can help make a change. Keep Everyone Informed. Hold the company accountable. And stay true to the principles in our Little Blue Book. I ask that you give Steven the same trust and support you have shown me. He cares deeply about doing what’s right for Datamax, and he will bring fresh energy to the years ahead. My greatest hope is that the company continues to grow, because that growth means opportunity for every person here. I have always said that you’re only a great leader when people believe you are one. You create an environment where people can succeed, then let them run with it. You all have done that for me.
Preparing for the Next Wave.
What’s next for me, exactly? I don’t know if I have a comprehensive answer for that just yet. But I do know two things:
The Next Wave is approaching, and It’s imperative that we invite everyone — employees, customers, and partners — to lean into the future with us.
Secondly, and lastly…
The Best is Yet to Be.
Your Raving Fan,
