The Optical Character Recognition Program

Running a business is all about finding new innovations to allow work to flow faster and to cut down man-hours spent on one project. Optical character recognition (OCR) is a program that can do that.

OCR is the electronic conversion of scanned images of handwritten, typewritten or printed text into machine-encoded. It allows you to convert these images with text into text documents that can be edited in Word using automated computer algorithms.

If you or an employee needs to use a long passage from a magazine or book in a document you are able to get that passage into your document using OCR faster than it would be typing the whole passage from scratch.

OCR will work on images and PDF files scanned in using a flatbed scanner or photos taken with digital cameras or mobile phones.

It is a simple program to use. It only takes a few steps:

  1. Scan the document you need with your modern scanner or upload the image you need to your computer.
  2. Your scanner will convert the document into a digital file. Open this file.
  3. Use the OCR to convert the image to text.
  4. Open the text in Word and make your edits.

You can either purchase the OCR program separately or search your computer for a program that contains OCR such as recent versions of OneNote and Adobe Acrobat.

If you don’t have a modern scanner that converts scans into digital files then it’s time for an upgrade.
